Tough Tournament for Anna

Hi all,

Friday saw Anna and Ilija both go down in straight sets in their semi finals in El Paso. This meant that it was time for Anna and me to jet off to Augusta, Georgia for a 25K.

The original plan was for her to play purely ITF’s on this trip but after her success in the summer in England it meant that she was eligible to play qualifying here. We stopped over in Dallas on Friday night and then completed the journey on Saturday by flying to Charlotte then renting a car and driving the 150 or so miles to Augusta. The flight to Charlotte was actually very relaxing as I, for some reason still unbeknown to me, was upgraded to First class. A tip for you all, if ever you can take the grind out of travelling then jump on the opportunity because they are few and far between.

Hola people,

So far, Augusta is a joke! It’s so cool! It’s not really a ‘happening’ place…it’s in the middle of a forest but all the houses are massive and the club is really nice! And I guess if you’re into scenery (which I’m not) then it’s pretty!

Through to the Semis – El Paso

Hi there,

As it stands, things are shaping up nicely for the academy and let’s hope it is a sign of things to come. Both Ilija and Anna are thru to the semi finals tomorrow after comfortable straight sets wins today in the quarters. After a slow start to the tournament, Ilija has found some good form whilst Anna has been exceptional throughout which is pleasing as ITFs in the past haven’t brought out the best tennis in her. Oscar got thru his first round but ran into trouble against his younger American opponent in the second round but I feel he is starting to adjust and relax into the touring life. Let’s see what the next few weeks can bring for him…

El Paso from a Player’s Perspective

We arrived in El Paso a few days ago; it took 2 days and 4 flights from Monte Carlo to get here which turned into a bit of a grind. But Hugh Grant was on our flight from Heathrow to New York so that was pretty cool. El Paso isn’t the most exciting place; it consists of the tennis club, the hotel, a few mountains and a whole lot of nothing.

Mixed Weather

Hi all,

Well the weekend brought very mixed weather from warm sunshine to hail and back again. This combined with the fact that the qualifying for the tournament had started meant that training on Saturday and Sunday had to be switched around slightly. The players, who are just starting an endurance block, did their physical sessions in the morning and then tennis in the afternoon.

The day prior to a tournament it is vital that the players get their heads down into some serious match play and hence they paired themselves up with an opponent outside of our group and played a practise set. When on the road it is important for them to utilise the fact that there are
foreign players around and to try to practise against them as much as possible. This enables the players to try their game plan against differing styles.

Oscar went through qualifying without any real hassle so the whole team will start their campaign tomorrow in the main draw beginning at 8am.

Let’s hope they can get off to a winning start!!!

Cheers

Hampo
